Gold Steps have continued to go from strength to strength with the release of their thoughtful new track.
Titled ‘Mirrored Souls’, it’s a spiky track that encompasses all that is brilliant about UK pop-punk, with the emotional atmospheres that have kept the genre feeling fresh for the last 30 years. A reflection on the past, pushed through the lens of the love, lust and loss that define the relationships we fall into in our youth, it’s a thoughtful and thrilling account of how it feels to look back on what was and wonder what things would be like in a different timeline.
It’s an expression of the band’s knack for penning a catchy hook as it is as much as it is their insatiable storytelling and of leaving you with plenty of food for thought long after the guitars have faded away.
Vocalist Betty Mauritz had this to say about the song, explaining,
“Mirrored Souls” journeys through the wistful yet painful memory of a past love, weaving between rose-colored memories, vulnerable reveals, and angsty bargaining as the narrator wonders: could their love have been saved, or was it always doomed? As you get older, you start to reflect on your past, people who’ve come and gone, and where they are now. Do they think about you too? What would have happened if you were still in each other’s lives? It recalls the promises and pitfalls of young love: if we grew apart, is there a future in which we find our way back to each other?”
The track picks up where Gold Steps left off in 2025, where they shared a string of singles.
There was ‘Rent Free’, which is as close to the Summer as you’re going to get in January.
And the bouyant ‘Beautiful Mess’, which sounds a lot like this.
