Ahhh the faithful BLEGH. A single moment of sheer brutality that makes the heavy even heavier. There are a lot out there, but these are the best of the best.
For the uninitiated among you, here’s what Urban Dictionary has to say on ‘BLEGH’:
They’re familiar, they’re plentiful. Here’s 15 of the very best.
15. AVERSIONS CROWN – THE GLASS SENTIENT It’s all about the build up here. The false sense of security gifted by the ambient break. The screaming at the sky vocal display. The split second of peace. Then BAM, all hell breaks loose. Absolutely beautiful.
14. AFTER THE BURIAL – LOST IN THE STATIC If you’re looking for some leftfield mosh based listening, After The Burial are the band for you. Though their experimentation places them in their own bracket, that doesn’t stop them from sticking some classic metalcore nods in for good measure, like this doozy.
13. BLACK TONGUE – FAUXHAMMER Bloody hell, we’re getting into flavour country here. The sheer velocity of the BLEGH that drips out of this disgusting offering from Hull’s favourite misery merchants will make you need to scrub extra hard in the shower.
12. OCEANS ATE ALASKA – BLOOD BROTHERS Only the most sophisticated of ears can truly appreciate the sporadic stylings of Oceans Ate Alaska. Luckily we are all on the same page and can all understand why this BLEGH slapping you in the face out of nowhere is so fantastic.
11. SWORN IN – DEADPAN This one’s for all the emos out there. Sworn In have always managed to combine the sad aesthetic with brutality and this is one of the shiniest jewels in their despondent crown.
10. YOUR DEMISE – MMX Now, this may be an introduction but it would be a crime to not tip our hats to the YD Unit. If this doesn’t get you more hyped than a drip full of golden syrup, then nothing will.
09. NORTHLANE – WINDBREAKER Northlane are such a technically gifted band that they don’t even need a BLEGH to make things even more intense. Yet here they are, throwing them in the sheer thrill and making us want to headbutt a wall.
08. TROPHY EYES – BANDAID The curveball to end all curveballs. Trophy Eyes’ debut EP was brimming with hardcore punk energy and this little burst of fury and subsequent BLEGH is why it has pride and place on this countdown. Who needs a breakdown to be brutal eh?
07. BREAKDOWN OF SANITY – THE GIFT Though they have now sadly split up, Breakdown Of Sanity are responsible for some of the most unrelenting and visceral metalcore going, especially on the brilliant ‘Perception’. When you can seemlessly sew a BLEGH into the fabric of a song, that’s how you know you’re on to something really special.
06. MOTIONLESS IN WHITE – SCISSORHANDS (THE LAST SNOW) Just because you like to make things dramatic doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of life’s simple pleasures. Step up Chris Motionless who sounds like he is about to spit blood here.
05. TRAITORS – ARROGANCE As Paramore once said “ignorance is your new best friend”, yet they could only ever dream of dispatching it at the level that Traitors do. Seriously, how many bands have the audacity to throw a “fucking” in front of their BLEGH? Not many, we’ll tell you that for free.
04. LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES – I SOLEMNLY SWEAR Guess how many people we have shouted the line that precedes this BLEGH at? Not that we’re counting but it’s at least 24. We don’t take shit from anyone.
03. STRAY FROM THE PATH- BADGE AND A BULLET Stray have always used the BLEGH to add to the intensity of their politically charged offerings and it has never felt more apt than on this slice of wonderful protest.
02. WAGE WAR – THE RIVER This is how you get playful with your brutality. Briton Bond’s audacity to clear his throat before delivering this absolute monolith is worthy of every whoop and holla you can muster.
01. ARCHITECTS – NAYSAYER The kings. The connoisseurs. The experts. The leaders of the pack. You don’t get much better at the BLEGH than the Architects boys. Though there are countless moments that could take this top spot, it’s Sam Carter’s momentary pause before inciting mayhem that puts ‘Naysayer’ just a whisker ahead of the rest.
The Blackout are back, and they are just as delighted about it as you are. Here, Sean Smith and Gavin Butler talk us through how the reunion came to be.
From massage guns to cycle shorts, the band round up all the items they cannot possibly hit the road without.
