Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Updates Fans Following Hospitalisation: “I’m In The Best Hands”

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has given an update to fans after being discharged from hospital, where he was treated for pneumonia.

The vocalist was first admitted to hospital last Thursday night, with his wife Ariana informing fans that the pair had been heading to Chicago to celebrate their eight-year anniversary before Whibley fell ill.

She wrote in a message to Instagram on Friday, the following morning:

“The scariest part is that there is a lot of strain on his heart and they are telling us that there is a possibility of heart failure.”

But yesterday, thankfully, the Canadian rocker was discharged from hospital – and now he’s provided a direct update to fans, which marks the first time we’ve heard from him since the incident.

Whilst the health concerns haven’t completely disappeared, Deryck appears in good spirits and is looking ahead, saying:

“I wanted to take a min to say thank you to everyone for so much love and support.

“Although I’m not out of the woods yet and have been told to be prepared for a bit of roller coaster sickness over the next couple of weeks, I’m staying positive and doing my best to get through all of this.

“I’m still bed ridden, having a hard time breathing, tight chest pains and some pretty wild fever dreams, that I guess are keeping this whole thing somewhat entertaining. I’m in the best hands and am on the right medicine.

“I plan on being my absolute best for When We Were Young next month. That’s my goal. Thank you, so much love, Deryck.”

Whibley has experienced a significant health scare before: in 2014 he was hospitalised for nearly a month with severe liver and kidney damage, and doctors told him one more alcoholic drink could be fatal.

More recently, the singer joined The Offspring onstage at one of their shows in New York, also alongside Simple Plan’s Pierre Bouvier, for a performance of ‘Why Don’t You Get A Job?’.
